Water Bead Activities For Sensory Play

Playing with water beads helps fine motor skills. It’s also great fun to watch them bounce around.

You can buy them in major toy shops and on Amazon. They need to be soaked in cold water for 8 hours.

1. WATER BEAD FISHING

Place items inside a big bowl of the beads, and have your child fish them out. This activity is amazing for helping fine motor skills. You can use anything from buttons, coins to small plastic toys- anything.

We chose marbles and it worked out really well. It provided E### with a challenge and the more marbles he fished out the harder it became. The last marble took us about half an hour to find.

Supervise young children with small items at all times.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Big bowl or box of water beads
  • 10-20 marbles ( or whatever item you choose to hide)

We had loads of fun with this challenge. Watch the beads have a tendency to bounce around all over the place if your a bit heavy handed like my boy.

You can really use your imagination with this. Find items to hide inside the beads and spend time trying to fish them out. You could use:

  • COINS
  • BUTTONS
  • SMALL PLASTIC ANIMALS
  • THREADING BEADS
  • PASTA SHAPES

The benefit of this activity is the development of fine motor skills.

Fine motor skills are needed for tasks like doing up buttons and holding a pencil. Because the beads are so small it works the small muscles in the fingers needed for these skills.

2. WATER BEAD EGG TIMER

This is a really simple but fun activity. Start with two small empty water bottles. Fill one of the bottles with the beads using the funnel.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 2 Small Water Bottles
  • Funnel
  • Water Beads
  • Glue Gun

Make sure you fill the whole bottle with water beads.

Using the glue gun, put some glue around the lid of one of the bottles then stick them together and wait for them to dry.

When glueing the two bottles together this needs to be done by an adult.

E### enjoyed funnelling the water beads into the bottles but then he let me glue the bottles together.

You only need to wait a few minutes for the glue to set and there you have it !! A water bead egg timer .

Awesome Water Bead Egg Timer!

3.SIMPLE SENSORY BIN

Pour your water beads into a large bowl or box and have your child simply put their hands into the beads.

The texture of the beads provides a unique tactile experience for your child. The feel of the beads on little hands provides amazing sensory input.

I challenge all you parents not to have a go yourself !!

Sensory bins are very popular with kids and you can have themed sensory bins. You could make a seaside sensory bin by hiding shells and small plastic fish inside… or you could make a dinosaur themed bin and hide little plastic dinosaurs inside the water beads?

Don’t you just want to put your hands in !

4. SENSORY WATER BEAD GLOW IN THE DARK LIGHT BOX

For this activity you need:

  • Shallow Plastic Food Container
  • Colourful Water Beads
  • Glow In The Dark Water Beads
  • A Bright Light.

Fill the container with a mixture of the coloured water beads and the glow in the dark beads. Mix them all up. Hold under the light for a couple of minutes.

The beautiful colours shine vibrant.

Then turn off the light and see the glow !

Enjoy the bright light show, then hold under the light and watch them glow!

5. WATER BEAD ICE CUBES

What you need:

  • Ice Cube Trays
  • Colourful Water Beads

Fill the ice cube tray with a few water beads in each square.

You can use any design of ice cube tray for this. Let your imagination run wild! Then put in the freezer overnight.

6. GLOW IN THE DARK WATER BEAD SENSORY BOTTLE

What you need:

  • Empty Water Bottle
  • Glow In The Dark Water Beads

Simply fill the bottle with the glow in the dark beads and then a little cold water. Put the lid on tightly and then hold the bottle under a bright light for up to 5minutes.

Turn out the lights. Then watch it glow !

7. MINDFULNESS COLOUR SORTING

What you need:

This simple activity is great for mindfulness and focusing in the moment. Sit on the floor with your child and spend some time separating all the water beads into the different colours.
